Shadow Tactics is a hardcore tactical stealth game set in Japan around the Edo period. A new Shogun seizes power over Japan and enforces nationwide peace. In his battle against conspiracy and rebellion, he recruits five specialists with extraordinary skills for assassination, sabotage and espionage.
Players take control of a team of five distinctive characters - a nimble ninja, a powerful samurai, a cunning geisha, a resourceful trapper, and a deadly marksman - and must navigate challenging levels filled with enemy patrols. The gameplay revolves around carefully observing guard movements, planning a sequence of coordinated actions, and then flawlessly executing those actions in real-time to eliminate threats and progress through the level unseen.
Each character brings a unique set of abilities to the table. Hayato the ninja swiftly assassinates foes with his sword and shuriken. Mugen the samurai overwhelms multiple enemies at once but sacrifices agility. Aiko the geisha can distract guards by going into disguise. Yuki the trapper sets deadly traps. And Takuma the marksman provides long-range firepower with his rifle. Mastering how to leverage the strengths of this diverse cast is crucial to success.
The game's "Shadow Mode" allows players to queue up one action per character and then execute them simultaneously, encouraging thoughtful, coordinated planning. Observing patrol routes, identifying opportunities for synchronized takedowns, and queuing up a series of actions to eliminate multiple threats at once requires keen strategy. However, the real-time nature means players must quickly adapt when plans go awry.
The meticulously designed levels offer multiple paths and solutions for each objective, requiring close observation of enemy behaviors and experimentation to determine the optimal sequence of actions. While extremely challenging, successfully executing a flawless plan is an immensely satisfying experience.
Replayability is enhanced by the ability to tackle objectives in different ways, complete optional side objectives, or attempt to speedrun levels in record time. The game's forgiving save/load system encourages this experimentation, with quicksave and quickload features that make it easy to iterate on strategies. For skilled players, the pursuit of optimal speedrunning routes becomes an engaging challenge.
