The Great War is over - the fight continues. Command a legion of soldiers, desperately trying to make their way home amidst the chaos of civil war. Lead them through the unforgiving wilderness onboard an armored train. Manage your crew and resources and try to survive.
The player commands a squad of 10-15 Czechoslovakian soldiers, each with specialized combat roles like riflemen, grenadiers, machine gunners, medics, and scouts. The turn-based system allows pausing at any time to plan moves and coordinate the squad's positioning and attacks. This rewards thoughtful use of terrain, cover, and each soldier's unique abilities. Snipers provide overwatch, medics stabilize wounded allies, and grenadiers clear entrenched enemies. Players must balance their squad's strengths and weaknesses to overcome challenges.
Between missions, players manage the train's limited supplies of food, fuel, ammunition, and other resources. Careful resource allocation and rationing are crucial, as players make difficult choices about how to best utilize them. Players can also upgrade the train and its carriages, and train soldiers in new specialties to improve their combat effectiveness. Monitoring individual soldier morale and condition is key, as fatigued, injured, or demoralized troops perform poorly in combat. This layered resource management adds strategic depth and tension, as players balance short-term tactics with long-term logistical concerns.
The game's compelling narrative, inspired by the historical Czechoslovakian Legion in the Russian Civil War, is delivered through cinematic cutscenes with live-action actors. Throughout the journey, players face numerous moral choices with far-reaching consequences, such as whether to risk the train's safety to help civilians or prioritize soldier welfare over local needs. These choices significantly impact the story's outcome, heightening the player's investment in the characters and their struggle to survive.
