Venture out into the Emberlands and uncover an ever-changing world filled with surprising encounters and mystical creatures! Save villagers who got lost in the Miasma, collect resources and rebuild your village to create a safe haven for your people.
You venture out from your home village into the surrounding Emberlands, a procedurally generated world filled with various biomes and challenges. Your goal is to explore this world, gather resources, and rescue lost villagers called "Knacks" to bring back to the village. The key constraint is your lantern, which acts as a timer - the lantern's light will gradually fade, forcing you to carefully manage your movements and time spent outside the village. If the lantern's light runs out, you become lost in the Miasma and must restart your run from the village. This encourages a cautious, strategic approach to exploration, as you must balance your desire to venture further and uncover more of the world against the need to return to the village before your lantern expires. Upgrading the lantern and other equipment through the resources you collect allows you to extend your range and time outside the village on subsequent runs.
Managing the various resources you collect during exploration, such as wood, stone, and special crystals, is a key aspect of the gameplay. You use these resources to upgrade and expand your home village, unlocking new buildings, vendors, and capabilities that aid in future expeditions. However, your inventory is limited, forcing you to carefully decide which resources to bring back on each run. Dropped items cannot be recovered, so you must plan your resource gathering and transportation back to the village. This adds an additional layer of strategy, as you must weigh the value of different resources against the space you have available.
The game features a roguelike structure, where upon your death, your character progress is reset, but the village remains upgraded to a certain point. This allows for a sense of persistent progression, as each successful expedition contributes to the long-term development of the village, even if the individual run ends in failure. The procedurally generated world and random encounters also contribute to the game's replayability, as no two runs will be exactly the same. You must adapt your strategies and resource management to the changing conditions you encounter, adding an element of unpredictability and challenge to each new expedition.
