At the core of the gameplay, you must strategically defend multiple vertical "lanes" on a train from waves of advancing enemies. You carefully position and upgrade your units - which can include powerful champion units, support units, and spells - to stop the enemy forces from reaching the top floor and extinguishing the "pyre", the game's health/victory condition.

❤ Customizable Deck Synergies

The deckbuilding system allows you to choose two out of five available "clans" to combine, with each clan having unique mechanics, cards, and a champion unit. This creates a huge number of potential deck combinations and synergies to explore. You can further customize your deck by upgrading individual cards and champion abilities over the course of a run. The deckbuilding is described as more "breakable" and open to player expression than similar games. By carefully synergizing your clan abilities and card upgrades, you can often assemble incredibly powerful, game-breaking combos - providing a satisfying sense of building towards a crescendo of power.

❤ Challenging Vertical Positioning

Enemies enter from the bottom floor and work their way up towards the pyre at the top. You must strategically position and upgrade your units on the different floors to counter this advance. Carefully choosing which units go where, and how to stack defensive and offensive synergies across the lanes, is a key part of mastering the gameplay.

❤ Extensive Replayability and Progression

With 20 possible clan combinations, over 220 cards, and 25 difficulty "covenant" levels to progress through, each run feels fresh and different as you experiment with new deck strategies and synergies. The game's logbook system tracks your progress and unlocks, providing a strong sense of progression and completionism that keeps many players engaged over hundreds of hours.

While the gameplay can become quite "broken" in the hands of skilled players, the difficulty scales appropriately. What felt overpowered on one run may barely be enough to succeed on the next, keeping the gameplay challenging and compelling even as you discover more powerful combos.
