Skautfold: Moonless Knight is a very open-ended Metroidvania, featuring a totally unique battle system. Set in an alternate history Japan in 1900, Lovecraftian horrors have plagued the world, as our very Moon opens up and becomes our end.
Players wield an innovative combat system that rewards split-second decision-making. The guard/stamina bar creates a dynamic defensive framework where perfectly timed blocks can reflect enemy attacks, dodge rolls create strategic openings, weapon types range from slow, powerful greatswords to quick daggers, players can 'feint' out of attack animations, and each weapon demands distinct timing and approach.
Unlike traditional RPGs, skills develop organically through direct action. Repeatedly taking damage increases character toughness, consistent weapon usage improves weapon-specific techniques, randomly scattered stat points and treasure chests help balance skill development, and players naturally become more proficient through consistent engagement.
The design encourages strategic exploration with multiple pathways that converge and diverge dynamically, hidden shortcuts that reward careful investigation, nine unique relics that unlock new traversal and combat possibilities, and environmental puzzles that challenge players' spatial reasoning.
Collected relics fundamentally alter player capabilities, including a grappling hook for vertical and horizontal movement, an infinite-arrow bow for ranged strategic options, fire vampire summoning for additional combat tactics, and teleportation enabling unexpected positioning.
Eight distinctly designed boss fights demand unique approach strategies, pattern recognition, creative use of acquired abilities, and precise execution of learned mechanics.
Skill-based combat systems, meticulously designed exploration, challenging, nuanced gameplay, and Lovecraftian atmospheric storytelling.
