Outlast 2 introduces you to Sullivan Knoth and his followers, who left our wicked world behind to give birth to Temple Gate, a town, deep in the wilderness and hidden from civilization. Knoth and his flock are preparing for the tribulations of the end of times and you’re right in the thick of it.
Players must utilize the game's environments, ducking into lockers, closets, and other concealed spaces to avoid detection by the various threats. The addition of a directional microphone mechanic allows players to better track the movement and location of enemies, informing their hiding and evasion strategies. Some reviewers noted that enemies could still detect the player too easily, even when hidden, leading to frustrating trial-and-error gameplay. Others praised the tension and challenge of the stealth sections, valuing the sense of vulnerability and fear they evoked.
The game offers more open, outdoor environments, introducing new traversal challenges, such as scaling cliffs, climbing ladders, and crossing perilous gaps. Players must carefully time their movements to avoid detection and maintain their escape from pursuing threats. The player character's movement and sprint abilities have been slightly improved, allowing for more responsive and fluid traversal. However, some players felt the controls could still feel a bit stiff or imprecise at times, leading to occasional frustrations during the more demanding platforming and chase sequences.
The limited inventory system returns, with players able to carry a camera, batteries, and bandages. Managing these limited resources becomes a key part of the gameplay, as players must carefully ration their battery power for the camera's night vision mode and use their bandages to restore health when injured. The introduction of the microphone mechanic adds another layer of resource management, as players must balance the use of this tool with their battery consumption. Some players appreciated this added strategic element, while others found the microphone to be an underutilized or underdeveloped mechanic.
