S.B.T.F. is a very hard arcade-style / rogue-like / perma-death first person shooter. You play as Marines who must brave dark, claustrophobic and terrifyingly intense Space Beast infested spacecraft in order to extract critical data and lucrative upgrades. Can you make it out alive?
Players take on the role of Marines exploring procedurally-generated space stations overrun by deadly aliens. To succeed, teams of 1-4 players must work together to download data from scattered terminals, disable the reactor coolants, and escape before the station self-destructs. The gameplay is brutally challenging, as a single hit from the alien "Space Beasts" kills the player instantly. This creates a constant state of tension and dread as players cautiously navigate the dark, claustrophobic corridors, fending off endless swarms of these lethal creatures. Death is permanent, causing players to lose any hard-earned upgrades and equipment.
Surviving requires employing smart tactics and effective coordination. Closing doors controls the flow of enemies, while activating sentry guns provides supplementary firepower. Players must manage limited resources like ammunition and battery power to stay alive. The procedurally-generated levels force players to continually adapt their strategies. The layout, enemy placements, and available resources change unpredictably with each run, rewarding flexibility and swift decision-making.
Downloading data terminals unlocks various upgrades for the player's equipment and abilities. These include enhancements to the motion tracker, flashlight, weapon capacity, and other critical systems. Earning and leveraging these upgrades is crucial for gradually increasing one's chances of survival over the course of a run. The sense of progression and character growth, combined with the high-stakes permadeath system, create a deeply engaging and rewarding gameplay loop. Players are relentlessly driven to push further, motivated by the thrill of acquiring new upgrades and the dread of losing it all.
The gameplay is heightened by the experience's intense, unsettling atmosphere. Tight, claustrophobic environments, a pounding soundtrack, and disorienting weapon effects like blinding muzzle flashes create a constant state of stress and unease. This immerses players in the desperate struggle against the relentless alien horde.
