I am excited to release my first game on Steam! SimpleRockets was released in 2013 for mobile and I've put a ton of work into it to get it ready for PC and Mac. It was inspired by KSP, and it offers a simpler 2D experience for building rockets and exploring space with realistic orbital mechanics.
The game's sandbox mode allows players to freely design and launch their own custom rockets and spacecraft. Players can drag and drop a variety of rocket parts, like engines, fuel tanks, and other components, onto attachment points to construct a wide range of creative designs. With no resource restrictions, players can experiment endlessly, building everything from basic single-stage rockets to complex multi-part spaceships. This open-ended sandbox provides hours of enjoyment as players test different configurations and strategies to achieve their spaceflight goals.
The game accurately models the physics of spaceflight, including factors like fuel consumption, weight, and atmospheric drag, by drawing upon Kepler's foundational equations developed centuries ago. Executing maneuvers like achieving orbit, landing on other planets, and performing interplanetary transfers requires a thoughtful, physics-based approach. Players must consider the intricacies of rocketry and astrodynamics to successfully navigate the solar system, providing an educational and satisfying challenge.
The game offers a series of built-in challenges that task players with accomplishing specific spaceflight objectives. These range from basic launch and landing procedures to more complex feats like orbiting with minimal fuel or landing on the moon. These challenges serve as a tutorial, introducing players to the game's mechanics, while also providing engaging, bite-sized goals to work towards. Overcoming these challenges, each with their own unique difficulties, is a key part of the gameplay experience.
Players can save and persist their sandbox creations, allowing them to build elaborate space stations, moon bases, and refueling depots, and seamlessly continue their progress across multiple launches. This persistence enables the creation of complex, multi-stage missions and the development of an evolving spaceflight ecosystem. Additionally, the game supports the ability to share custom spacecraft designs with others, enabling the community to discover and experiment with each other's creations.
Compared to more complex space simulation games, the game offers a more approachable and accessible experience. Its 2D, simplified presentation and intuitive controls make it easier for newcomers to grasp the fundamentals of rocketry and spaceflight. The game's tutorial system also provides a well-structured introduction, guiding players through the core mechanics. This accessibility, combined with the game's relatively low hardware requirements, makes it an attractive option for those looking to explore the joys of space simulation without the steep learning curve of more advanced titles.
