It is the year 2034. Beneath the ruins of post-apocalyptic Moscow, in the tunnels of the Metro, the remnants of mankind are besieged by deadly threats from outside – and within. Mutants stalk the catacombs beneath the desolate surface, and hunt amidst the poisoned skies above.
The game casts players as Artyom, who must navigate the dangerous, post-apocalyptic tunnels of the Moscow Metro. It combines combat, stealth, and survival elements to create a tense and immersive experience.
The combat challenges players to think tactically. Ammunition is scarce, so users must carefully manage their resources and choose engagements wisely. The game features a variety of customizable firearms, each with unique characteristics. In addition to guns, Artyom can utilize melee weapons like knives and improvised tools for stealthy takedowns. Enemies demonstrate intelligent AI, taking cover, flanking, and coordinating attacks.
Stealth is a core mechanic. Players can avoid combat altogether by sneaking through levels, taking out enemies silently, and using the environment. Artyom can crouch, move slowly, and extinguish lights to remain undetected. Silent takedowns allow non-lethal or lethal elimination of unaware foes. Successful stealth often leads to better story outcomes and moral points.
Survival is a constant concern. Users must manage limited resources like ammunition, gas mask filters, and medkits to stay alive in the radioactive Metro. Scavenging for supplies is crucial, as running out of critical items creates tension and urgency. The "moral points" system rewards ethical choices that impact the narrative and endings.
