There is an unusual cabin deep in the woods. It had served as a laboratory and a dwelling for three generations of Lodgers. But as of late the latest Lodger has been noticing weird changes in familiar surroundings; things are missing, noises and rattle heard. Something odd is coming out of the woods.
As the Lodger, players must survive the night in an isolated cabin deep in the woods. The gameplay revolves around exploring the procedurally-generated rooms, turning on flickering lights, hiding from mysterious "Guests," and managing the passage of time until dawn arrives.
Players navigate the ever-changing layout of the cabin, carefully turning on lights to reveal important items and clues. However, the darkness harbors unsettling "Guests" that will cause the Lodger to lose their sanity if detected. Players must sneak between furniture and hide in closets to avoid these threats, constantly balancing exploration and evasion.
Scattered throughout the cabin are clocks that can be activated to speed up the arrival of dawn, the Lodger's ultimate goal. But these clocks are not easily found, and the Guests become more persistent as time runs short. Players must efficiently explore the cabin, manage their time, and maintain their sanity to reach the safety of daylight.
The randomly generated cabin layout and unpredictable Guest behaviors create a unique challenge in every playthrough. Players must adapt their strategies, learning from mistakes and discoveries to devise new approaches. Multiple possible endings, determined by the Lodger's actions, further encourage experimentation and repeat playthroughs.
The eerie art style, unsettling sound design, and the Lodger's unreliable narration all contribute to a palpable sense of unease and disorientation. Without explicit guidance, players engage with the experience on a deeper, more personal level, heightening the overall sense of immersion in the game's psychological horror.
