Bionic Dues is a tactical, turn-based roguelite with mech customization. Out-think wide-ranging tactical situations featuring robots with bad GPS, terrible aim, insecurity, a lack of focus, a tendency to backstab, and dozens of other maladies to exploit.
Players control a squad of four specialized mechs, each belonging to one of six distinct classes like Assault, Siege, or Sniper. Choosing the right mix of mechs is crucial, as their abilities and strengths complement each other. During missions, players can only control one mech at a time, but can swap between them freely, though this consumes a turn. Between missions, the in-depth mech customization system allows players to equip their squad with a wide variety of procedurally-generated weapons, abilities, and defensive upgrades. This encourages experimentation, as players optimize each mech for different mission types and challenges.
The turn-based combat system requires careful positioning and use of abilities. Each mech has access to a variety of special weapons and tools, from long-range sniper rifles to area-of-effect explosives. Effectively countering enemy strengths and exploiting their weaknesses is key to success. Enemies exhibit a range of unique behaviors and malfunctions, from poor aim that destroys nearby cover to backstabbing tactics. Learning to navigate these challenges is essential, as a single misstep can quickly lead to disaster.
Every campaign features a procedurally-generated web of over 120 missions, spread across 23 unique types. This ensures that no two playthroughs are identical, as players must adapt their strategies and mech compositions to the changing circumstances. The randomized elements, combined with the extensive mech customization system, encourage experimentation and multiple playthroughs, as players seek to overcome the game's challenges in new and innovative ways.
While the narrative takes a backseat, the game's cyberpunk-inspired setting and tongue-in-cheek tone add a layer of charm. The quirky personalities and malfunctions of the enemy robots provide humorous moments that complement the tense tactical gameplay.
The game offers a range of difficulty settings, from the more casual "Quite Casual" to the notoriously challenging "Misery" mode, catering to players of various skill levels. Additionally, the option to save and reload at any time, as well as an "Ironman" mode for a more punishing, permadeath-based challenge, provide accessibility options to suit different preferences.
