Monster Hunter Stories is an RPG that takes the world of Monster Hunter and expands upon it in new and exciting ways! No longer are you hunting monsters, but raising them! In this deep story featuring heroes known as Monster Riders, you will live alongside monsters and form lifelong bonds with them.
The game reimagines the core monster-hunting gameplay as a turn-based RPG. Rather than hunting monsters, players take on the role of a "Monster Rider" and befriend, raise, and battle alongside them. The game features a strategic, rock-paper-scissors style battle system that requires carefully considering the attack types of both the player's monster ("Monstie") and the enemy to gain advantages in combat.
Players can capture eggs in the wild and hatch them into new Monsties. These Monsties can then undergo further enhancement by changing their base elemental attribute (e.g. fire, water, thunder) and associated Kinship Skill. This deep level of customization allows players to create unique team compositions tailored to their playstyle.
Combat uses a turn-based, rock-paper-scissors system. Each attack is classified as Power, Speed, or Technical, with each type having advantages and disadvantages against the others. Players must pay attention to their Monstie's and the enemy's attack types, then choose the appropriate counter to gain the upper hand. Successful counters build up the Kinship Gauge, which can then be used to perform powerful Kinship Skills.
As the Kinship Gauge fills, players can choose to Ride their Monstie, triggering an impressive attack sequence. Riding provides a powerful offensive boost, but comes at the cost of temporarily dismounting the player's Monstie from the battle. Managing the Kinship Gauge and timing Riding attacks is a core strategic element.
A significant portion of the gameplay involves exploring the world to find and collect monster eggs, which can then be hatched to add new Monsties to the player's party. The exploration loop of traversing environments, finding dens, and securing new eggs is a key appeal for many players.
The game features a substantial amount of post-game content and challenges, including high-difficulty quests, boss battles, and the ability to further optimize and min-max one's Monstie party. The depth and replayability of the endgame helps keep players engaged long after completing the main story campaign.
