FIRSTDATE: LATE TO DATE is a romantic-comedy interactive cinematic (FMV) game in which the audience determines the progress of the movie with the options that appear every minute.
Players shape the humorous, heartfelt story of Erdem and Derya's first date by making frequent choices, about once per minute, across more than 5000 words of branching dialogue. The 4K FMV format brings the performances to life, with lead actress Aysima Ateseduran captivating players as the charming, witty Derya. Each decision opens up new story paths, leading to 7 "elimination" endings where the date crashes and burns, and 8 main endings that take the relationship in very different directions.
Reaching one main ending unlocks the ability to skip ahead to key decision points, encouraging players to replay the 30-minute story and explore the many possibilities. The pause feature lets players carefully consider each choice, while scene skipping reduces frustration when hunting down new endings.
A few players encountered bugs that blocked achievements and complained of awkward English subtitles that sometimes clashed with backgrounds. However, the developers seem eager to polish these rough edges.
The acting deftly balances laugh-out-loud comedy with genuine emotional moments, immersing players in the ups and downs of a memorable first date. Erdem and Derya's story branches and twists in so many hilarious, surprising, adorable ways that players can't help but dive back in to try again and discover every potential fate for the unlikely couple.
While the occasionally confusing translation and minor glitches detract a bit, the game's quirky sense of humor, endearing cast, and meaningful choices make it an easy, breezy charmer. Players seeking a lighthearted, replayable FMV rom-com will find themselves happily along for the ride, eager to explore every avenue of Erdem and Derya's relationship.
