The Citadel is a brutal first person shooter, and a love letter to classic games such as Marathon, Doom and Wolfenstein 3d. Descend into the depths of a dark citadel, and fight through 6 Episodes and 30 levels of action packed with 6 challenging bosses. Go forth, Martyr.
Players take on the role of the Martyr, a superhuman clone tasked with descending into the dark Citadel to defeat an unborn god that has brainwashed cybernetically enhanced enemies. The gameplay blends classic first-person shooter mechanics with more tactical, cover-based combat.
Enemies attack with fast, aggressive patterns that are difficult to simply overpower. Projectile-based attacks (rather than hitscan) can be dodged with skilled timing and positioning. Taking cover and carefully timing movements and shots is often necessary to survive the onslaught.
The game features 14 distinct weapon types, each with their own alternate firing modes. This allows players to adapt their playstyle, whether they prefer a high-powered sniper rifle, a rapid-assault weapon, or even melee combat. Reloading varies between magazine-fed and individual cartridges.
Robust difficulty settings let players adjust parameters like enemy health/aggression, ammunition supplies, recoil, and even the chance for guns to jam during intense firefights. These customization options create a more tailored experience for each player's skill level and preferences.
Levels incorporate significant vertical traversal, requiring double-jumps to reach certain areas. This blends the shooting action with precision platforming. Players can also interact with the environment, such as kicking enemy corpses into hazards.
Rather than a standard health bar, players manage a "Wellness" meter that determines both maximum health and sprint duration. Maintaining this meter by consuming food items is key to enduring the demanding combat encounters.
The game features a high level of mechanical depth, with unique reload animations, the ability to manually clear jammed weapons, and environmental interactions that enhance the sense of tactile combat. These small touches contribute to an overall sense of immersion.
