Pilfer from pirates, conspire with cardinals and perform miracles with an incompetent magician. The Procession to Calvary is a Pythonesque adventure game made from Renaissance paintings, and a spiritual successor to the critically acclaimed Four Last Things.
You control the game's protagonist, a female military officer, through a traditional point-and-click adventure. To interact with the environment, you click on hotspots and select actions like "look at", "talk to", and "use" from a "verb coin" menu. Dragging and dropping inventory items onto these hotspots is the primary way to solve the game's puzzles.
The gameplay follows a branching narrative structure, with multiple endings determined by your choices and actions. You can opt for a more violent approach, killing characters along the way, or solve puzzles and progress the story peacefully. These different playstyles result in unique conclusions to the narrative.
The puzzles blend challenge and fairness, rarely resorting to "moon logic" that frustrates players. Careful observation and lateral thinking are necessary to make progress, as the game world reacts dynamically to your behavior. For example, killing certain characters can lock you out of the main story path, forcing you to load a previous save.
Quality-of-life features enhance the experience, such as an autosave function, the ability to double-click to run, and a hotspot highlighter to identify interactive elements. While the save system is limited to 4 slots, the autosave helps mitigate any potential issues.
