Indebted to the wrong people, with his life on the line, veteran of the U.S. Cavalry and now hired gun, Booker DeWitt has only one opportunity to wipe his slate clean. He must rescue Elizabeth, a mysterious girl imprisoned since childhood and locked up in the flying city of Columbia.
The game features smooth, intuitive controls that allow players to seamlessly transition between using firearms and equipping powerful "Vigors" (special abilities) during combat. The aiming and movement mechanics feel natural, providing a satisfying first-person shooter experience.
Players can experiment with a wide variety of weapon and Vigor combinations to suit their preferred playstyle. Whether they prefer a stealthy, long-range approach or an aggressive, up-close combat style, the game's systems accommodate a diverse range of tactics. Players can, for instance, use the Possession Vigor to turn enemies against each other, or the Murder of Crows Vigor to summon a swarm of deadly projectiles.
The game's three-dimensional environment, featuring a Sky-Line system for rapidly traversing the city of Columbia, adds depth to the combat encounters. Players can gain the high ground, flank enemies, or quickly reposition during fights by grappling onto the Sky-Lines. They can also open "Tears" in the fabric of reality to summon environmental hazards, further expanding their tactical options.
The Vigors system grants players access to a wide array of supernatural abilities, such as Shock Jockey's electric discharges and Possession's ability to turn enemies into allies. Players can combine these Vigors in creative ways, and further customize their playstyle by equipping various gear items that provide additional passive bonuses.
Enemies in the game are designed to provide a challenging, yet fair, combat experience. They use cover, flanking maneuvers, and coordinated attacks to counter the player's tactics, encouraging strategic thinking and adaptation rather than relying on a single overpowered strategy.
