SEGA®’s most requested re-release of all time finally comes to a new generation. Shenmue delivers an epic story of revenge within a unique open world that is still unrivalled in depth and detail. Return to the epic saga that defined modern gaming. The saga begins…again.
Players freely explore the meticulously detailed environments of Yokosuka, Japan and later Hong Kong, China. The games feature a persistent day-night cycle, with NPCs following their own schedules and routines. This creates a living, breathing world that players can fully immerse themselves in.
As the teenage protagonist Ryo Hazuki, players take on the role of a detective, talking to NPCs, examining objects, and piecing together clues to uncover the truth behind his father's murder. The games encourage a methodical, investigative approach to progressing the mystery-driven narrative.
When confronted with hostile enemies, players can utilize Ryo's Hazuki-style jujitsu techniques, performing a variety of kicks, punches, throws, and counters inspired by the Virtua Fighter series. Mastering the different moves and combos is an integral part of the gameplay experience.
In addition to investigation and combat, the games feature a significant amount of mundane everyday activities players can engage in, such as working part-time jobs, playing arcade games, going shopping, and simply wandering the streets. While some may find these activities tedious, they contribute to the sense of realism and immersion in the game world.
As players explore the world and participate in various activities, they can level up Ryo's stats and learn new jujitsu techniques, allowing them to tailor his abilities to their preferred playstyle and adding a sense of RPG-like depth to the gameplay.
The games incorporate Quick Time Events (QTEs), which require players to press specific buttons or perform actions in a timely manner during certain cutscenes and encounters. While these QTEs can be challenging and frustrating, they also contribute to the cinematic, interactive nature of the experience.
