Masquerada is a single-player tactical RPG set in a Renaissance-inspired city of magic, where real-time combat can be paused to set up elemental combos powered by Venetian-styled masks. Come for gorgeous hand-drawn art; stay for the rich lore & a thoughtful, fully-voiced tale of intrigue & tragedy.
The real-time combat with pause mechanics form the core of the gameplay experience. Players command a party of up to three characters, each wielding a unique "Mascherine" - a magical mask that grants control over a different element. During combat, you can pause the action at any time to queue up abilities, position your party, and plan out combos. Abilities allow you to apply various elemental "tags" to enemies, which can then be triggered by other party members' abilities for devastating effects. This encourages thoughtful, synergistic use of your party's skills.
As your party levels up, you'll earn skill points to invest in each character's linear skill tree. This allows you to incrementally unlock new abilities and passive bonuses, tailoring your party's capabilities to your preferred playstyle. The ability to freely respec your skill choices at any time further enhances this customization. Additionally, finding and equipping new Mascherines lets you experiment with different elemental affinities and power sets.
The combat is generally approachable on the normal difficulty setting, though some reviewers noted occasional difficulty spikes, particularly with certain boss encounters. The lack of manual checkpoints can make replaying these challenging battles feel frustrating.
One area of criticism is the companion AI, which can sometimes make questionable decisions, such as clustering together in the path of area-of-effect attacks. This can force players to take a more hands-on approach to managing their party's movements and actions than they might prefer.
