„IS Defense” is a game set in politically-fictional 2020 – where the expansion of ISIS went out of hand. The player takes the role of NATO’s stationary machine-gun operator, deployed to defend the shores of Europe.
The control scheme is simple, allowing players to easily aim and fire a machine gun. However, the game introduces a skill tree system that provides meaningful upgrades to health, firepower, and support abilities, incentivizing repeated playthroughs to unlock new capabilities and increase one's effectiveness.
At the core, the gameplay delivers an exhilarating, high-intensity experience. Players must hold off relentless hordes of ground troops, vehicles, and suicide bombers, creating a frantic, action-packed atmosphere. The challenge ramps up with each level, as new enemy types and overwhelming waves force players to carefully manage resources and target priorities.
The game offers surprising strategic depth. Players must decide when to call in support from air strikes, infantry, or supply drops, weighing the tradeoffs of various reinforcements to counter the evolving threats. This tactical element adds complexity, as players must prioritize targets and manage their limited ammunition and health.
Upgrading the character, machine gun, and rocket launcher through the skill tree provides a tangible sense of progression and empowerment. The visual and audio feedback when mowing down swarms of enemies is immensely satisfying, creating a cathartic, power-fantasy experience.
Many players have highlighted the game's ability to create memorable moments, such as narrowly surviving a suicide bomber attack or orchestrating a coordinated assault with air support. The combination of intense action, strategic decision-making, and gradual character growth encourages repeated playthroughs, as players strive to improve their scores and unlock new upgrades.
