Stories: The Path of Destinies is an Action RPG, an enchanted storybook filled with madcap fantasy tales, each told by a zippy narrator attuned to the player’s choices and actions.
The combat system is the star of the gameplay, with players describing it as "fast and fluid." The core mechanics revolve around counter-attacks, dodging, and wielding a variety of magical sword abilities. Chaining together smooth combos and prioritizing dangerous enemies is key to success, with the game's skill-based system rewarding skilled performance through experience point bonuses.
The progression system allows for diverse playstyles. Players can unlock and upgrade a deep skill tree, granting access to unique abilities like the hookshot, time manipulation, and specialized sword attacks. This encourages experimentation, whether players want to build a mobile, dashing character or focus on mastering sword-based combos.
The levels themselves provide ample room for exploration. Many areas are gated by Elemental Doors that can only be opened by acquiring the corresponding upgrades, incentivizing players to revisit locations and uncover new paths and secrets. The level design maintains a solid balance between guided progression and opportunities for lateral exploration.
The most distinctive aspect of the gameplay, however, is the choice-driven narrative. Each decision the player makes branches the story in a unique direction, with up to 24 possible endings to discover. This structure provides tremendous replayability, as players are compelled to explore the various storylines in search of the "true" path to victory.
