Filterless fashionista Pipiro and poindextrous punster Pokkle are ordinary step-siblings facing an ordinary day in their ordinary little burg...until a grand theft macguffin occurs and they decide to become unlikely heroes for cash and glory (in that order). This goes about as well as you’d expect.
Players level up by eating food items that drop from monsters, rather than gaining experience from defeating enemies. This creates an interesting risk-reward dynamic. Players can consume the food immediately for healing, or hold onto it to trade in sets of 10 of the same type for more powerful, experience-granting items at the inn. This food-based progression system encourages strategic inventory management, as players must carefully balance their short-term healing needs with long-term leveling goals.
The game features two playable protagonists - Pokkle and Pipiro - that players can seamlessly swap between. Pokkle excels at close-range melee combat and can even block magical attacks under certain conditions. Pipiro, on the other hand, gains access to a wide variety of ranged magical spells as the game progresses. Adapting one's playstyle to the strengths and weaknesses of each character is crucial for overcoming the game's more challenging encounters.
In addition to basic attacks, both Pokkle and Pipiro can charge up powerful special moves indicated by on-screen smiley faces. Timing the execution of these devastating charged attacks is key to efficiently clearing groups of enemies or overcoming tough boss fights.
Navigating the game's hand-crafted, non-randomly generated dungeons is a core part of the experience. These environments feature environmental puzzles, such as block pushing and switch-based mechanics, that players must solve to progress. The layouts, while potentially repetitive at times, are filled with secrets and hidden paths that encourage thorough exploration.
Players can choose to bring a cat or dog companion into dungeons, where the pet will assist in collecting items and healing the party. Alternatively, the pet can be sent on its own adventures, with players directing its actions at key decision points. This pet management mechanic provides an engaging side activity that complements the main dungeon crawling.
