Fact: everything is better with lasers. So we put lasers on over 30 angry giant insects who want to stop you, Space Moth, from escaping Earth and going to the Moon. Show them who's boss and blast your way into space! (Check out the all new SPACE MOTH: LUNAR EDITION, linked below!)
Players control a space moth as it battles an onslaught of laser-wielding giant insects trying to stop its escape to the Moon. The controls are simple, with eight-directional movement and three buttons for shooting, using a devastating laser attack, and deploying bombs. The core gameplay loop revolves around the "soul drain" mechanic - repeatedly hitting larger enemies with the wide shot depletes a portion of their health, causing them to start emitting a neon glow. Players can then finish off these "neon" enemies with the focused laser attack to earn a significant scoring bonus, though these aggressive foes now fire more deadly bullet patterns.
While considered a challenging "bullet hell" shmup, the game offers features to help ease in newcomers. The rebalanced Arcade Mode is more beginner-friendly, while veteran players can tackle the intense DX Mode. An optional auto-bomb system automatically deploys a bomb to save the player if they are about to be hit, at the cost of removing all their remaining bombs - a helpful safety net without trivializing the challenge. The game also features a forgiving checkpoint system, saving the player's progress at the start of each stage and boss fight. If the player loses all their lives, they can restart from the last checkpoint with their score reset, allowing them to continue progressing.
In addition to the core shooting action, Space Moth DX offers a satisfying scoring system to encourage repeated playthroughs. Players can earn points by grazing enemy bullets, collecting hidden items, and defeating bosses within the final two seconds of the timer. The combination of these scoring mechanics and the game's challenging nature creates a compelling loop of attempting to improve one's high scores through increasingly skilled play.
Visually, the game has a distinct pixel art style that evokes classic arcade shmups. Bright, colorful sprites of the space moth and its insect enemies are complemented by beautifully detailed backgrounds, creating an immersive, retro-inspired atmosphere. The mesmerizing, prog rock-inspired soundtrack has also been praised by many players as a highlight of the overall experience.
