Shift Happens is a cooperative platformer for two. You and a friend shift your mass, throw each other and puzzle your way through four stages of stylized imaginary worlds. Including the occasional backstabbing and taunting. Play with a friend on a couch, online or even special singleplayer levels.
Two players work together to navigate challenging levels in this cooperative puzzle platformer. The core gameplay mechanic allows players to shift their mass between each other, with one becoming large while the other becomes small. This size-shifting mechanic is central to solving the game's puzzles, as players must coordinate and communicate to effectively use their changing sizes to progress.
The size-shifting ability creates a unique twist on traditional platforming. Players must constantly consider how to best utilize their changing sizes to overcome obstacles, activate switches, traverse gaps, and assist one another in reaching new areas. This innovative mechanic requires close teamwork and strategic thinking between the two players.
The levels present a variety of puzzles designed around the size-shifting mechanic. As the game progresses, the puzzles become increasingly complex, testing players' ability to coordinate and problem-solve together. Many levels also offer optional challenges and secrets to discover, providing additional replayability and a sense of reward for thoroughly exploring each stage.
Due to the nature of the size-shifting, the two players often take on complementary roles in solving puzzles. The larger player may need to lift, throw, or otherwise assist the smaller player, while the smaller player can access areas the larger one cannot. This encourages a sense of teamwork and interdependence, as players must work together to progress.
While cooperation is essential, the game also allows for a degree of playful sabotage between players. The ability to grab and throw each other, as well as the potential for one player's actions to inadvertently hinder the other, can lead to humorous and unexpected moments of emergent gameplay. This adds an element of friendly competition and risk-taking to the cooperative experience.
The game's puzzle platforming is approachable for players of various skill levels, with the core mechanics being easy to understand. However, the game also offers optional challenges and bonus levels that provide a greater test of players' platforming skills and coordination. This allows both casual and more experienced players to find an appropriate level of challenge, ensuring the gameplay remains engaging for a wide audience.
