Paint the Town Red is a chaotic first person melee combat game set in different locations and time periods. The voxel-based enemies can be punched, bashed, kicked, stabbed and sliced completely dynamically using almost anything that isn't nailed down.
Players can interact with almost any object in the environment as a weapon, from basic items like chairs and bottles to more specialized weapons like katanas and shotguns. This freedom to use the environment creatively allows for a great deal of player expression and experimentation.
The enemies are made up of destructible voxels, which creates a visceral and satisfying combat experience. Players can systematically destroy different parts of an enemy's body, watching as their skin, muscles, and bones are progressively damaged and dismembered.
As players defeat enemies, they can unlock various powerful abilities and upgrades to aid them in combat. These include devastating special attacks like shockwaves and laser beams, as well as permanent upgrades that enhance the player's stats and combat effectiveness. Acquiring and mastering these abilities adds an additional layer of strategy and skill to the gameplay.
The game also features an extensive rogue-lite dungeon crawler mode, where players choose from a variety of unique character classes and must delve deep underground to battle a variety of deadly creatures and bosses. The procedurally generated levels and the need to carefully manage resources and upgrades between runs adds a high degree of replayability and challenge.
The game features a robust level editor and Steam Workshop support, allowing the community to create and share a vast array of custom levels, scenarios, and gameplay modifiers. This user-generated content greatly expands the game's longevity and gives players access to an endless variety of new and unique experiences to explore.
