Whenever mist hangs over Lake Orwell, sailors catch sight of a phantom castle just out of reach. As they draw near, it fades away, leaving only questions for all who have seen this “Castle Strangerock.” Now, you must aid your charge in uncovering its secrets...even if it costs you your very soul.
Players traverse a vast, interconnected overworld filled with branching dungeons, ruins, and regions. As they progress, they unlock new abilities, weapons, and items that grant access to previously inaccessible areas. This Metroidvania-style design encourages players to carefully map the world, uncover shortcuts, and discover hidden paths to fully explore the island of Harlech.
The real-time combat revolves around strategic positioning and timing. Players must stand behind enemies to land critical backstab attacks, while also avoiding enemy strikes. The methodical, slower-paced combat contrasts with the fast-paced hack-and-slash of Falcom's Ys series. Each weapon type has unique skills that players learn through repeated use, adding depth to the combat system.
The stat allocation system allows players to freely distribute points as they level up, enabling them to tailor their character towards preferred playstyles, whether physical damage, magic, or a hybrid approach. Players must carefully manage their stat requirements to equip the best gear.
Powerful "Guardian" abilities can be equipped to grant various buffs and enhancements, further augmenting the character's capabilities and adding another layer of customization and strategy.
Xanadu Next features environmental puzzles that often involve manipulating objects, such as moving crates and platforms, to progress through the world. Solving these puzzles is rewarded with useful items, equipment, and access to new areas, complementing the game's focus on exploration.
