Proverbs is a picross/minesweeper hybrid featuring a single ENORMOUS puzzle, inspired by Bruegel the Elder's 1559 painting "Netherlandish Proverbs"
The game challenges players to complete a massive 54,000+ piece grid puzzle that reveals the 16th century painting "Netherlandish Proverbs" by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Players use numeric clues (0-9) to determine where to place light tiles within the grid, similar to the logic of minesweeper.
Unlike traditional minesweeper, the numbered clues indicate how many light tiles must be placed within 1 square of that clue. This twist on the minesweeper formula requires players to use logical deduction to determine the correct tile placements based on the surrounding clues.
The game features a built-in hint system that provides the next correct move if the player gets stuck, ensuring progress is never blocked. Players can also easily undo any incorrect tile placements, allowing for experimentation and learning through trial-and-error. Additionally, players can freely navigate between different sections of the large puzzle, enabling them to switch focus when they become stuck on a particular area.
Completing sections of the puzzle gradually uncovers the iconic 16th century artwork, which features over 100 illustrations of Dutch proverbs and idioms. This steady progression and the gradual reveal of the painting provide a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep playing. The game also offers over 90 achievements to collect, further encouraging players to explore the entire puzzle.
Reviewers praise the game's calming and meditative atmosphere, which is enhanced by the soothing background music, soundtracks, and the ability to play while listening to podcasts or other audio content. The simple but addictive nature of the puzzle-solving mechanics creates a zen-like experience that is perfect for unwinding and passing the time.
