The world of Konung is a unique and spacious fantasy land, that combines parts of known history with classical myths and the legends of the Chronicles, including immortal heroes, magical artefacts and ancient sorcery.
Players take on the role of one of six different heroes, each with unique backgrounds and abilities, in an effort to stop a corrupted former hero who has become the "dark Master" and is trying to subdue all other magical artifacts. The game combines elements of strategy and town management with traditional RPG gameplay.
The game's real-time combat system allows players to control a party of up to 8 companions. Battles can be challenging, as enemies often come in large groups and can quickly surround and overwhelm the player's party. Effectively managing the abilities and actions of multiple party members during combat is crucial to success.
The game features an open-world design, giving players the freedom to choose where to go and what to do. However, some locations and quests are gated behind specific story progression or conversations with NPCs, requiring a degree of exploration and backtracking to uncover all the game has to offer.
One of the key gameplay features is the ability to own and manage towns. When players liberate a town from enemy control, they can recruit NPCs to join their party and collect resources from the town. Managing the town's production, defenses, and population is an important strategic element.
The game's deep RPG progression system allows players to customize their hero and companions by investing skill points into a wide range of abilities and characteristics. This level of build diversity and replayability enables different character builds to approach challenges in unique ways.
The game is known for its unforgiving difficulty, especially in the early game. Players must carefully manage their resources, plan their battles, and make use of all the game's mechanics to overcome the challenges they face. While this difficulty curve can be a turnoff for some, others find the sense of accomplishment in overcoming the game's obstacles to be immensely rewarding.
Many players praise the game's unique setting, blending of various mythologies, and open-ended gameplay that allows for a high degree of freedom and replayability. The town management and character customization systems are also widely enjoyed. However, some players found the lack of a tutorial, translation issues, and technical bugs to be frustrating elements of the experience.
