XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the 2012 award-winning strategy game of the year. Earth has changed and is now under alien rule. Facing impossible odds you must rebuild XCOM, and ignite a global resistance to reclaim our world and save humanity.
You command a customizable squad of soldiers in turn-based combat missions. Each class has unique abilities, allowing you to create a well-balanced team. Careful positioning and tactical decision-making are paramount, as you must consider factors like line of sight, elevation, and enemy patrol patterns to set up effective ambushes and flank the opposition. Managing action points and weighing risks versus rewards on each turn is crucial, as permanently losing soldiers is a constant threat. One defining feature is the "concealment" mechanic, which lets you move your squad unseen through the fog of war until you initiate combat. This enables stealthy approaches and carefully planned ambushes, adding an extra layer of strategy beyond firefights.
Objectives go beyond eliminating all enemies. You may need to rescue VIPs, defend key locations, plant explosives, or escape within a time limit. These varied objectives force you to adapt your tactics and squad composition to each unique scenario. The time pressure of many missions is a significant challenge, as you must balance speed and caution. Rushing can lead to disastrous mistakes, but dawdling allows the enemy to strengthen their position. Mastering this delicate balance is key to success.
You form a strong attachment to individual soldiers, who gain experience and unlock new abilities as they survive missions. Losing a veteran can be devastating, motivating you to employ careful tactics to protect your most valuable assets. Customizing soldiers' appearances, armor, and call signs further reinforces this sense of personal investment. As they rank up, you can specialize them into distinct roles, creating a cohesive and complementary squad.
Outside of combat, you must manage your underground resistance headquarters, the Avenger. This involves allocating resources to research new technologies, construct facilities, and upgrade weapons and armor. You must also contend with the persistent threat of the alien Avatar Project, which will result in an automatic game over if allowed to reach completion. Balancing mission priorities, responding to emerging threats, and maintaining a global network of resistance cells are all crucial to slowing the Avatar Project's progress.
