Launch into the Borderlands universe and shoot ‘n’ loot your way through a brand new adventure that rockets you onto Pandora’s moon in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!
The game introduces several new gameplay mechanics that set it apart from previous entries. Players can now perform high jumps, float through the air, and execute "butt-slams" to slam down onto enemies from above, thanks to the low gravity environment of Pandora's moon, Elpis. This adds a layer of verticality and mobility to the classic shooting and looting. Additionally, players must manage their oxygen levels when exploring areas without an atmosphere, incentivizing them to seek out refill stations or use their "Oz Kits" to replenish their supply. While initially an annoyance for some, many found the oxygen mechanic added an extra strategic element. The new Cryo elemental damage type can freeze enemies solid, allowing players to shatter them with a melee strike, providing a fresh new way to incapacitate foes. The game also introduces laser-based firearms that function differently depending on the environment, adding an extra layer of consideration when choosing the right weapon.
Players praised the depth and creativity of the skill trees for the four new playable Vault Hunters. Each class offers a variety of unique abilities and playstyles, from Wilhelm's combat-focused Enforcer skills to Nisha's quick-drawing Lawbringer talents. The skill trees allow for a high degree of customization and synergy between abilities, enabling players to tailor their characters to their preferred playstyle.
While some felt the overall narrative was not as strong as Borderlands 2, the game was praised for its ability to flesh out the backstory and motivations of the series' iconic villain, Handsome Jack. Being able to witness Jack's transformation from a would-be hero to a villainous tyrant added nuance and depth to his character.
The introduction of the "Grinder" device, which allows players to combine lower-tier weapons into higher-quality loot, was seen as a welcome addition. This helped address complaints from the previous game about an abundance of underwhelming weapon drops, providing players with more opportunities to acquire desirable gear.
