Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history.
Players can customize each character's combat abilities using a system called Quartz. Quartz are slotted into each character's orbment, granting them access to new arts (magic spells), stat boosts, and other combat abilities. This deep customization system allows players to tailor their party's capabilities to their preferred playstyle. The turn order is not fixed, with character turns dynamically shifting during battle. This adds an element of strategy as players must consider not just their own actions, but also how the turn order will shift.
The default difficulty setting provides a satisfying challenge without becoming overly frustrating. Lower-level enemies can still pose a threat if not approached carefully, while boss battles require more tactical thinking. However, the game is forgiving, allowing players to flee from battles they are not prepared for with a 100% success rate. Players can adjust the difficulty level and use a "Retry Offset" feature to lower the battle difficulty on subsequent attempts after a party wipe, making the game more accessible.
Random enemy encounters are seamlessly integrated into the environment, with enemies visible on the field. Players can choose to engage them or avoid them entirely. Approaching enemies from behind grants the party a free initial turn, encouraging strategic positioning. Each enemy has distinct attack patterns and abilities that players must adapt to. Battles often feature groups of enemies that must be prioritized and eliminated efficiently, presenting an engaging tactical challenge.
