It's not about saving the world. In this "leisure adventure RPG," failing student Marie pursues alchemy, adventures, and quests while aiming to graduate in five years. "Atelier Marie," the origin of the Atelier series, has been remade with new elements!
The remake stays true to the original 1997 release, maintaining a more basic and stripped-down approach compared to later Atelier titles. Players engage in a loop of gathering materials, synthesizing items, and completing quests to progress the story and earn money.
A defining feature is the 5-year in-game time limit. Every action, from traveling to gathering to combat, consumes a day. This constant time pressure requires carefully managing your schedule to ensure you can create the high-grade item required to impress your professor before the time runs out. The remake, however, provides an "Unlimited Mode" to remove this time limit for a more relaxed experience.
Material gathering is simple, with players either randomly encountering resources/battles when traveling or directly selecting a gathering spot to automatically obtain items. The alchemy system is straightforward as well, only requiring the necessary ingredients to synthesize an item, without the complex traits and element systems of newer Atelier games.
Combat is turn-based and basic, with characters having a limited set of attack, defense, and healing skills. There are no special combo attacks or complex mechanics, making battles a relatively simple affair focused on whittling down enemy HP.
As players progress, they can recruit adventurer characters to join their party, each with their own personalities and side stories to uncover. Building up relationships and friendship levels with these characters unlocks new events and dialogue. Quests and requests from townspeople also provide money and item rewards.
