Pushing the boundaries of what fans have come to expect from the record-setting entertainment franchise, Call of Duty®: Black Ops II propels players into a near future Cold War
The game builds upon the strong foundation established in previous entries, while introducing several notable innovations and enhancements that were widely praised by players. Across its three main modes - Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies - the gameplay experience is diverse and well-executed.
Treyarch introduced a branching narrative structure, where players' in-game decisions and actions can significantly impact the progression and ending of the story. This represented a bold step forward, moving away from the traditionally linear campaign experiences. Players take on the roles of two protagonists - Alex Mason from the original Black Ops, as well as his son David - set in two distinct time periods: the 1980s Cold War era and a near-future 2025 setting. This dual-timeline approach allows for a more expansive and thematically complex campaign, blending covert operations, advanced technology, and the consequences of past choices. Missions span a variety of global locations and feature a mix of stealth, action-oriented, and occasionally choice-driven gameplay scenarios, giving players a greater degree of agency and replayability.
The "Pick 10" system allows for greater customization of loadouts, enabling players to freely allocate their available points across different weapon attachments, perks, and equipment. This added a new layer of strategy and depth, as players could tailor their loadouts to better suit their individual playstyles. The introduction of "Score Streaks" in place of traditional "Kill Streaks" further incentivized objective-based gameplay, rewarding players for actively contributing to their team's success. The diverse map selection catered to a variety of gameplay styles, offering a high degree of vertical integration and environmental interactivity, providing numerous flanking routes and dynamic tactical possibilities.
The Zombies mode builds upon the well-received experience from the previous Black Ops title, offering a refined and expanded cooperative gameplay experience. In addition to the classic "Survival" mode, the game introduced several new Zombies gameplay variants, such as the narrative-driven "Tranzit" and the challenging "Grief" mode. The Zombies maps were widely praised for their intricate designs, environmental storytelling, and diverse gameplay challenges, with fan-favorite maps like "Mob of the Dead" and "Origins" offering a level of depth and complexity that elevated the experience.
