Conquer the ancient Greek world in Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece, an epic strategy wargame that expands and refines the award-winning Hegemony: Philip of Macedon with brand new content and features.
The game features a seamless, satellite-accurate map covering Greece, Crete, Thrace, Illyria, and Asia Minor, with around 200 cities that serve as the backbone of the game's mechanics.
Carefully managing supply lines is a core aspect of the gameplay. Players must create and maintain supply routes between their cities, farms, and mines to ensure their armies are fed and funded. Disrupting an opponent's supply lines through raiding, blockades, and other tactics is a key strategic consideration. Failing to properly manage supply can lead to armies starving and cities revolting, making this logistics system a central challenge.
While the combat system is not as tactically deep as a dedicated battle simulator, it still provides meaningful strategic choices. Players must carefully compose their armies, leveraging the strengths of different unit types like hoplites, peltasts, and cavalry. Positioning troops, flanking maneuvers, and timing charges are important for victory in battles. Units can gain experience and upgrade over time, rewarding thoughtful tactical play.
The game offers three historical campaigns, allowing players to experience the rise of Philip of Macedon, the Archidamian War, and the Ionian War, each with unique objectives and challenges. Additionally, the sandbox mode lets players choose from 26 different factions, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, to forge their own empire in ancient Greece.
The game's quest system provides a narrative framework, with players completing historical objectives to advance the story. As they progress, players unlock new technologies, units, and other rewards that enhance their faction's capabilities, creating a sense of progression and the ability to shape the story of ancient Greece's conflicts.
