Portobugia is a management/survival/inspection game where you manage a port and must supply a city with goods and food. To do so you must unload boats, but, be careful, some of them could be infected! You will also face difficult events, to fight them, you can upgrade, construct and research!
At the heart of the gameplay, players must carefully examine each incoming vessel's documentation and visually inspect the ship to identify any potential signs of pest or disease infestations. This "Papers, Please"-style inspection mechanic requires attention to detail, as players must correctly verify the ship's report to determine whether to allow the vessel to unload its cargo or refuse it entry. Properly identifying and rejecting infected ships is crucial to preventing the spread of disease that can devastate the city's resources.
In addition to the boat inspection duties, players must manage the flow of resources in and out of the port to supply the nearby city. Unloaded cargo from approved ships provides the food, goods, and other materials needed to sustain the city's population. Players must carefully balance the resources being sent to the city against what is required to upgrade and expand the port's infrastructure. Failing to provide the city with sufficient supplies can lead to unrest and the decline of the settlement.
To handle the increasing demands placed on the port, players can construct new buildings and upgrade existing facilities. This allows for greater efficiency in unloading ships, processing resources, and supporting the city's needs. The tech tree system provides opportunities to research new technologies that unlock additional building options and enhancements. Managing the port's development is crucial to long-term survival and growth.
The game introduces various random events that can positively or negatively impact the port's operations. These events require players to make tough decisions, such as whether to risk accepting a potentially infected shipment or to spend resources on dealing with a crisis. Navigating these unpredictable challenges tests the player's problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
The game offers multiple scenarios, each with its own unique objectives and challenges. This adds replayability and variety to the experience, as players must adjust their strategies to succeed in different settings. The scenarios range from the basic port management to more specialized tasks, such as constructing a battleship using limited resources.
