You're a retired paleontologist. Collect fossils and solve puzzles in the calm of your old garage!
At the core of the gameplay, players must sort through boxes of 10-12 procedurally generated fossil specimens and deduce the correct evolutionary relationships between them. This involves analyzing how the fossils' physical traits, such as size, color, and ornamentation, change from one generation to the next. Players then arrange the fossils into family tree-like structures, ensuring that each "parent" fossil only differs from its "child" fossil by a single trait mutation. As the game progresses, the puzzles become more complex, with the introduction of fossils that obscure or omit certain identifying characteristics, requiring deeper analytical thinking to correctly piece together their lineages.
After completing each sorting puzzle, players can select one fossil from the box to add to their personal collection. These collected fossils can then be displayed and arranged within the player's virtual workshop space, allowing for a satisfying sense of progression and customization. Players can also combine certain fossils through a "breeding" mechanic, creating new, rarer specimens with higher "star" ratings to further expand their collections.
Fossil Corner features three core fossil types - shells, crinoids, and trilobites - each with their own distinct visual styles and evolutionary patterns. As players progress, they'll encounter an ever-growing variety of species, colors, patterns, and other distinguishing features, keeping the sorting puzzles feeling fresh and engaging throughout the experience.
The game's design accommodates both short, casual play sessions and longer, more intensive gameplay periods. Players can easily jump in, complete a few fossil sorting puzzles, and then return to the game later, with no pressure to maintain a constant pace. The progression system, which centers around gradually expanding the player's workshop space and unlocking new collection and display options, also allows for a flexible, self-directed experience, making the game well-suited for players seeking a relaxing, low-stress puzzle game.
