Fuga: Melodies of Steel is an RPG where you place children, each with their own unique characteristics and skills, at different gun turrets in a tank to fight against the enemy.
The game presents a distinct turn-based combat system that revolves around controlling a group of children, each operating a different type of gun turret on a massive tank. Players must carefully manage their team composition, switching between characters mid-battle to exploit enemy weaknesses. Cannons excel against heavily armored foes, grenade launchers inflict status ailments, and machine guns quickly strip away defenses. Depth emerges as players can position characters in the front line to man the main guns, or in a support role to provide unique passive buffs and special attacks. Building "affinity" between characters unlocks powerful "link attacks" that devastate enemies. Additionally, the tank wields a devastating "Soul Cannon" that can instantly defeat a boss, but at the cost of sacrificing one of the children.
Between battles, players have a limited number of "action points" to spend on upgrades, meals, and relationship-building. Carefully prioritizing how to allocate these resources is crucial. Enhancing the tank's weaponry, armor, and systems improves combat capabilities, but investing in the children's bonds can unlock game-changing abilities.
The game offers branching narrative paths, allowing players to choose "safe," "normal," or "more rewarding yet challenging" routes through each chapter. These decisions impact the story's resolution, with multiple possible endings based on the player's choices and actions.
A major strength is the strong emotional connection players can form with the cast of child characters. The game skillfully fleshes out their personalities and relationships, which players can further develop through dialogue and shared experiences. This investment intensifies the dramatic premise, as the children confront the harsh realities of war and face the possibility of permanent loss.
