Umurangi Generation is a first person photography game in the shitty future. Set in Tauranga Aotearoa off the back of an impending crisis you are a courier for the Tauranga Express. Throughout the game you will unlock a variety of lenses and equipment.
The core gameplay revolves around taking photographs. Players receive a checklist of specific shots to capture, such as 7 birds or a shotgun, a pistol, and a rifle. However, the game encourages exploring beyond these objectives and freely composing your own creative images. The camera controls feel intuitive, allowing adjustment of the ISO, aperture, and shutter speed to achieve desired photographic effects. Experienced photographers can fine-tune their shots, while newcomers can still quickly grasp the fundamentals.
As you navigate the dystopian environments, the game rewards close observation and curiosity. Hidden throughout the levels are collectible film canisters, postcards, and other items that unlock new camera equipment and upgrades. This encourages thoroughly searching every corner, as you uncover subtle narrative threads woven into the densely-packed graffiti, posters, and other environmental details.
The game's flexible approach allows for multiple playstyles. You can methodically hunt down each required shot, or simply explore and capture whatever catches your eye, completing the checklist organically. The scoring system rewards creativity and composition, rather than just speed.
While a time limit is present for each level, it is associated with a bonus objective and can be ignored on your first playthrough. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere and exploration, rather than feeling rushed. As you progress and unlock new gear, you can then revisit earlier levels to tackle the timed challenges with your improved skills.
