UnMetal is a 2D stealth action-adventure that pays homage to the classics with a healthy dose of humor and satire. You play as Jesse Fox, who is definitely NOT an elite commando, under arrest for a crime he didn't commit, and must escape a covert military base using his wits and fists.
The gameplay consists of navigating through 2D levels, avoiding detection by enemies, and using a variety of tools and weapons to progress. The core loop revolves around carefully planning and executing stealthy maneuvers to overcome obstacles and reach objectives.
Players must observe guard patterns, time their movements, and utilize the environment to sneak past or incapacitate enemies without being detected. The game offers a variety of stealth techniques, such as hiding in lockers, crouching behind objects, and using diversionary tactics like throwing objects to distract guards. Successful stealth takedowns reward players with experience points, which can be used to unlock new skills and abilities.
While stealth is the preferred approach, the game also provides a range of combat options, including basic fists, firearms, and explosives. However, the game encourages non-lethal takedowns, penalizing players for eliminating enemies. Additionally, the protagonist has access to a selection of gadgets and tools, such as a slingshot, chloroform, and electronic lockpicks, which can be used to overcome obstacles and neutralize threats in creative ways.
Each level is a self-contained environment with multiple paths and hidden secrets to discover. Players must navigate these environments, using their stealth skills and problem-solving abilities to progress. The narrative is seamlessly integrated into the level design, with the protagonist narrating his story as the player explores and uncovers new information.
The game features a leveling system that allows players to customize the protagonist's abilities. As players earn experience points, they can allocate points to various skills, such as increased stealth, combat prowess, and the ability to craft new items. This customization system encourages experimentation with different playstyles and strategies, adding to the game's replayability.
The gameplay is characterized by a comedic tone and parody of the Metal Gear franchise. The game is filled with tongue-in-cheek humor, absurd situations, and meta-commentary that pokes fun at the tropes and conventions of the stealth genre. This lighthearted approach keeps the experience fresh and engaging, even during challenging or frustrating moments.
