The Gunk is an action-adventure game in which you play as Rani, part of our duo of gritty space haulers. As they’re struggling to bring in funds, they chance upon an untouched planet brimming with life. They came in search of valuable resources, and it looks like they’ve hit the jackpot…
Players control Rani, the protagonist, who is equipped with a powerful vacuum-like "Power Glove." Using this tool, players can suck up the toxic "gunk" that has corrupted the lush alien planet. As players clear away the gunk from affected areas, they witness a dramatic visual transformation, with the environment blooming back to life in vibrant colors and lush vegetation. This core loop of exploration and environmental restoration drives the player's progress through the game's linear levels and chapters.
In addition to gunk-clearing, the gameplay incorporates light platforming and environmental puzzle-solving elements. Players must navigate 3D levels, jumping across gaps, climbing ladders, and traversing narrow paths. While the platforming is described as relatively easy and straightforward, it still provides a satisfying challenge. The environmental puzzles, though not overly complex, task players with utilizing the Power Glove's suction ability in creative ways to progress, such as moving objects or activating mechanisms.
As players explore the alien world, they can scan various plants, minerals, and objects to catalog them in Rani's database. This scanning mechanic unlocks upgrades for the Power Glove, enhancing its cleaning capabilities, such as increased range or suction power. Players can then apply these upgrades to further improve Rani's efficiency in restoring the environment. While the upgrade system is limited, it provides an additional layer of progression and encourages thorough exploration.
The gameplay does feature some basic combat scenarios, where players encounter and defeat hostile creatures, typically by using the Power Glove to suck them up or perform simple attacks. However, the combat is described as relatively unchallenging, acting more as a minor obstacle than a core gameplay element. Overall, the general consensus is that the experience leans more towards a relaxing, casual exploration rather than a difficult or demanding one.
