Banner of the Maid is a mix of turn-based strategy and JRPG. Set in an alternate French Revolution with fantasy elements. As the young officer Pauline Bonaparte you will have to lead your troops to battle and play a role in the political vortex of Paris.
Players command a variety of unit types, including light and line infantry, light and heavy cavalry, artillery, and military musicians, on grid-based battlefields. The different unit classes have a rock-paper-scissors relationship, where certain classes have advantages and disadvantages against others. Effectively leveraging the strengths of each unit - from the brave and sturdy infantry to the fast-charging cavalry - is crucial to victory.
As players progress, they can recruit over 30 unique characters to join their army. Each character is assigned to a particular unit class, which can be further customized and upgraded. Players can equip characters with various weapons and gear, and unlock new skills and abilities through leveling up and completing challenges. This allows for a high degree of unit specialization to fit the player's preferred playstyle.
The game features over 30 main story missions, as well as optional side missions and repeatable training battles. Objectives vary, from routing all enemy forces to protecting important characters, or completing special challenges within a set number of turns. The diverse map layouts and environmental conditions, such as weather effects, add further tactical considerations for players to navigate.
Beyond the tactical combat, the game introduces a light faction management system. Players must carefully navigate the political landscape of 18th century France, making choices that impact their relationships with various factions, such as the Royalists, Jacobins, and Malmaisons. These decisions can unlock new recruitment options, shops, and other resources to support the player's military efforts.
The game offers multiple difficulty settings to accommodate different player skill levels. Story mode provides a more accessible experience, while the Normal and General modes present greater strategic challenges. General mode in particular imposes harsher penalties for losing units in battle, requiring players to approach each mission with greater care and foresight.
