Solar Settlers is a card-driven space exploration strategy game set in the far future. Our sun is on the verge of collapse and so mankind has taken to the stars aboard colony ships to seek out a new home.
You start the game with colonists exploring the unknown sectors of space, gradually revealing new planets and resources as they move around the board. Each revealed sector can contain different types of planets, such as gas giants that produce hydrogen, jungles that generate oxygen, and water worlds that provide various resources. Balancing exploration to uncover valuable cards and planets with managing your limited resources of oxygen, hydrogen, and metals is key. You can play cards to upgrade planets, granting them better actions or automatic resource production, but you must also consider whether to discard cards for immediate resource benefits.
Efficiently managing resources to keep your colonists alive and allow them to spread across the solar system is crucial. Each colonist requires 1 oxygen per turn, and running out will cause them to suffocate. Hydrogen is used to move colonists between sectors, while metals are required to play upgrade cards. The ultimate goal is to settle a specific number of colonists within a limited number of turns. Settled colonists are removed from your resource-gathering workforce, so you must carefully decide when to prioritize colonization over continued exploration and resource collection.
As you progress and win games, the difficulty increases. The required number of settled colonists goes up, while the number of turns allowed to do so decreases. This forces you to become more efficient and strategic with your actions. The game also features a variety of unlockable alien races, each with unique starting conditions and special abilities. These different races significantly change the optimal strategies and playstyles, adding considerable replayability. You can also unlock additional cards and technologies to further customize your approach.
The combination of random map generation, card draws, and resource management leads to unique challenges in every game, encouraging experimentation and a willingness to try different strategies. The tight, 15-20 minute playthroughs also maintain a sense of freshness and engagement. The procedural nature of the game, along with its expanding pool of unlockable content, ensures that it remains compelling and replayable for a long time. Players frequently cite the game's ability to provide a thought-provoking experience in a short time frame as one of its greatest strengths.
