A retro space strategy RPG with base building, deep tactical combat, crew management and emergent storytelling. Halcyon 6: Lightspeed Edition is a massively enhanced version of the Award Winning indie strategy RPG, Halcyon 6.
The turn-based combat system centers around a clever "Exploitation" mechanic. Players must strategically apply debuffs to enemies, such as hull breaches or engine failures, and then exploit those weaknesses with complementary attacks for increased damage. This creates a satisfying loop of carefully managing your ship and officer abilities to gain the upper hand. The combat is further enhanced by the game's faction system, which requires players to tailor their strategies to counter the unique strengths and weaknesses of each alien race.
In between combat encounters, players must carefully manage the Halcyon 6 starbase. This XCOM-inspired base building system tasks players with allocating resources to construct new facilities, research technologies, and train their officer corps. The real-time strategic layer allows players to dispatch fleets to nearby star systems, gathering resources and handling emergent threats, adding depth to the resource management gameplay.
A key aspect of the experience is the player's ability to recruit and customize their team of officers. These officers can fulfill various roles within the starbase, contributing to its overall efficiency, or be deployed in combat, where their unique abilities can turn the tide of battle. The Lightspeed Edition introduces a robust progression system, with 6 subclasses, 3 prestige classes, and over 20 new powers to unlock, allowing players to tailor their roster to their preferred playstyle.
The game's narrative blends humor, drama, and a sense of urgency as players work to rebuild the Terran Federation and defend against the impending alien invasion. Events and story moments are generated dynamically based on the player's actions, creating a unique and replayable experience. The tongue-in-cheek writing, reminiscent of Monty Python and Douglas Adams, adds a lighthearted and entertaining layer to the overall experience.
