NieR: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful machines.
Players take control of the android protagonist, deftly switching between savage melee strikes and precise ranged attacks to engage in fast-paced battles. The combat system's tight controls and smooth animations make it intuitive for newcomers to pick up, while offering depth and complexity for experienced action game players. Chaining together light and heavy attacks, players can perform high-speed combos, while also switching between a diverse arsenal of unique weapons. The "Pod" support system allows players to supplement their offensive arsenal with a variety of ranged attacks and special abilities. Pods can target enemies in both manual and lock-on modes, and players can upgrade them over the course of the adventure to unlock new attack patterns and capabilities.
The experience seamlessly shifts between diverse gameplay elements, keeping the action fresh and engaging. Players will encounter on-rails shooter segments, hacking mini-games, 2D side-scrolling platforming, and more, with the controls and mechanics feeling cohesive and natural regardless of the current playstyle.
As players progress, they obtain new weapon types, learn additional combat skills, and equip "Chips" that provide a wide range of stat boosts and abilities. This robust customization system encourages experimentation, allowing players to fine-tune their loadout to suit their preferred strategies or counter specific enemy types.
In addition to the core combat and customization, the game features an open world environment with no loading screens, inviting players to slow down and explore. Side quests and optional content provide deeper insights into the lore and characters, while challenging boss battles test the player's mastery of the combat mechanics.
