Monster Slayers is a rogue-like deck-building RPG adventure. Create a hero and choose your path through the perilous Northern Valley as you battle to become a true Monster Slayer.
Players create a hero from one of six different classes - Rogue, Ranger, Knight, Barbarian, Cleric, or Wizard - and build a customized deck of cards to battle monsters and enemies. The deck-building aspect allows players to strategically shape their deck by acquiring new cards from merchants, treasure chests, and allies. Each card has a cost in action points and/or mana points that players must balance to play the most effective combinations.
The core combat system revolves around playing the cards in the player's customized deck. Enemies also play by the same card-based rules, forcing players to strategically counter the opponent's deck with their own selection of special attacks, buffs, debuffs, and magic spells. The outcome of each battle depends on the player's ability to effectively utilize their card-based abilities.
Upon the player's hero dying, a new adventure begins with a randomly generated world. However, players can carry over certain upgrades and equipment from previous runs, allowing for persistent progression. This includes unlocking new abilities, classes, and companions that can be used in future playthroughs, adding a sense of long-term development.
The game's levels are procedurally generated, providing a different experience each time. Players must navigate the non-linear map, making strategic decisions about which encounters and events to pursue, such as which merchants to visit, which monsters to battle, and which upgrades to acquire.
As players progress, they can recruit companions to join their quest. These companions provide unique abilities and special effects that can be utilized in combat, adding another layer of strategy to the gameplay.
