With his sister Kaori held hostage, Yuuto must fight as an Etranger, a warrior of power, and take up the sword to fight alongside the beautiful female Spirits who protect the land from an evil that threatens to consume it.
The core gameplay revolves around grid-based tactical battles where players must carefully position and command a party of characters known as "Spirits". Each Spirit has a specific class and role, such as frontline fighters, mages, healers, and debuffers. Players must form effective combat squads by selecting the right mix of Spirit classes to overcome the challenges presented in each battle. The gameplay emphasizes careful strategic positioning and timing of abilities, as there is no random element - success is entirely dependent on the player's tactical decisions.
One compelling feature is the persistent nature of the party. Characters that survive battles can gain experience and level up, allowing players to customize and improve their squad over time. However, if a character falls in battle, they are permanently lost, adding a high-stakes permadeath system that forces players to be extremely cautious. This permanent consequence of defeat creates a strong sense of attachment to the characters and a tension during battles, as losing a key Spirit can drastically impact the player's ability to progress. It also encourages experimentation with different squad compositions and tactics to avoid such devastating losses.
Players praise the strategic depth of the combat system. The rock-paper-scissors style interactions between the five Spirit classes, along with the limited abilities and positioning requirements, create a complex and challenging tactical puzzle that must be solved in each battle. This depth, combined with the game's multiple branching storylines and endings, provides a high degree of replayability. Players must approach battles differently based on the story choices they make, leading to varied experiences on subsequent playthroughs as they attempt to master the combat system. The rewarding nature of overcoming the game's tactical challenges, and the feeling of attachment to the persistent party, are major factors that draw players into repeated playthroughs.
