GoNNER is a tough as hell procedurally-generated 2D platformer with roguelike elements, following the largely misunderstood and altruistic Ikk on a journey to cheer up his only friend in this world - a giant landbound whale named Sally - by searching for just the right trinket in the deep and dark places nearby.
At the start of each run, players can choose from a variety of "heads" (which grant passive abilities), weapons, and "backpacks" (which provide active abilities). These loadout choices remain consistent throughout a single run. The core gameplay involves platforming through procedurally-generated levels, shooting and jumping on enemies to earn combo points, and navigating to end-of-area boss fights. Enemies exhibit distinct behaviors that players must learn to overcome, and levels are designed to provide challenge and variety. If the player takes damage, their head, weapon, and backpack will be knocked off, forcing them to quickly retrieve these items before they can continue. This risk-reward mechanic adds tension and encourages careful play.
Players earn "glyphs" (the game's currency) by stringing together quick kills without taking damage. The more enemies defeated in rapid succession, the higher the combo multiplier and the more glyphs earned. The combo system provides a strong incentive for skilled, aggressive play. Players are rewarded for maintaining high kill counts and prioritizing offense over defense. The heightened music tempo during combos also adds to the intensity and sense of progress. Glyphs can then purchase new items, ammo, and even extra lives at shops between levels. Managing resources and deciding how to spend glyphs is an important strategic consideration.
The game features hidden secret rooms and challenges. These optional detours can reward players with new unlockable items, but require extra skill and exploration to find. Discovering and mastering these secret areas provides an additional layer of depth and replayability. Players are encouraged to experiment and push the boundaries of their abilities to uncover the game's hidden content.
