Dead Secret is a first-person horror mystery set in rural Kansas in 1965. A reclusive professor is dead and it’s up to you to crack the case before you become the next victim. Investigate the murder and explore the story Time Magazine called “captivating” and “deeply creepy” .
You take on the role of Patricia Gable, a journalist investigating the mysterious death of reclusive professor Harris Bullard. The core gameplay loop involves exploring Bullard's secluded home, uncovering clues and documents, solving puzzles, and piecing together the story to determine what really happened.
The game utilizes a limited, point-and-click movement system. You cannot freely roam the environment, but instead click on designated spots to move your character to that location. This fixed-point movement is likely a design choice to accommodate the game's original VR functionality. To interact with objects, you simply click on them, triggering Patricia to examine or pick up the item. The inventory management is also handled through a point-and-click interface.
The puzzles are generally considered to be logical and well-designed, if not overly challenging. They primarily involve finding and combining items to progress through the environment and uncover new areas. Many of the puzzles also require you to examine documents and clues to deduce the solutions. The difficulty level is approachable, allowing you to focus more on the mystery and exploration rather than getting stuck on complex brain-teasers.
While not a pure horror game, the title incorporates elements of suspense and occasional scares. The creepy, atmospheric setting of the secluded farmhouse, accompanied by unsettling sound design, creates a palpable sense of unease. Additionally, the game introduces a masked stalker character that will periodically appear, forcing you to hide and avoid detection. These tense moments add an layer of urgency and fear to the otherwise methodical exploration and puzzle-solving.
An interesting aspect of the gameplay is the inclusion of multiple possible endings. Your choices and conclusions drawn from the evidence gathered can lead to different conclusions about the professor's death and the identity of the killer. This encourages replayability as you seek to uncover all of the narrative paths and endings.
