In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the Earth's surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age. The year is 2033.
You take on the role of Artyom, a young man tasked with venturing through the treacherous tunnels and surface of the irradiated Moscow wasteland to save his home station from a growing threat. A key aspect of the gameplay is the need to manage your survival. Equip a gas mask to venture into areas with toxic air, and regularly replace the mask's filters to avoid suffocating. Manually charge your flashlight to keep the dark tunnels illuminated. These mechanics create a constant sense of tension and resource management that enhances the game's immersive survival horror atmosphere.
The combat offers a variety of approaches. Engage enemies head-on with an arsenal of unique, upgradable firearms. Alternatively, the game encourages stealth, allowing you to silently take out foes or bypass them entirely. The AI adapts dynamically, becoming more alert if you alert nearby enemies. This dual approach to combat gives you the freedom to tackle encounters in your preferred playstyle.
The in-depth weapon customization system lets you modify your firearms with various attachments and upgrades. This adds an element of strategy, as you must balance the advantages of each attachment to suit your preferred playstyle and the challenges of each environment.
While the overall narrative progression is linear, the game encourages exploration of the detailed, atmospheric environments. Uncover optional side content, including diary entries and hidden safes that provide additional context and resources. The ruined metro stations and surface locations themselves convey a sense of the hardships faced by the survivors.
Multiple difficulty settings, including the challenging Ranger Mode that removes many HUD elements and increases the lethality of combat, provide a high degree of replayability. Combined with the game's branching narrative and multiple endings based on your choices, there is ample incentive to revisit this harrowing journey through the Moscow Metro.
