Centuries have passed since the events of RefleX and mankind has once again attained civilization. Now, ancient technology born of a twisted mind sets in motion a chain of events designed to bring divine retribution down upon mankind.
The player controls a ship that can move in all four directions. The ship has access to three main weapons: a rapid-fire machine gun that can be upgraded by collecting power-ups, a lock-on lightning bolt that can hit enemies on a separate lower plane beneath the player's ship and builds up a recharge meter, and a powerful beam weapon that destroys enemy bullets in front of the ship but drains the lightning attack meter. Managing the recharge of the lightning attack and carefully timing the use of the beam weapon are core gameplay challenges. Players must balance offense, defense, and mobility to survive the intense enemy onslaught.
The game utilizes a dual-layer stage design. Enemies and obstacles appear not just in front of the player's ship, but also on a separate lower plane. Players can only attack the lower-plane enemies with the lightning attack, adding an extra strategic element as they must divide their attention between the two layers.
The boss battles feature large, multi-segmented enemy ships with diverse attack patterns. Defeating the bosses often requires skillful use of the beam weapon to destroy their projectiles, as well as careful maneuvering to target their vulnerable points.
The score-based system rewards players for using the lightning attack to defeat enemies, with higher multipliers for destroying more foes in quick succession. This encourages players to master the game's mechanics to achieve high scores, adding to the title's replayability.
