Battlepillars is a real-time tug-of-war strategy game in which you command caterpillars armed to the teeth with flamethrowers, sticky honey, mines, machine guns, and more!
At the heart of the gameplay, players construct their own customized caterpillar armies from over 15 different segments. These include a variety of weapons like flamethrowers, machine guns, and rocket launchers, as well as utility pieces that provide armor, speed boosts, and mines. Each segment has unique stats and costs, forcing players to carefully consider how to build the most effective units for each situation.
The primary in-game resource is leaves, which automatically generate over time. Players must balance deploying new caterpillars from their leaf pool versus investing in upgrades that increase the maximum leaves and generation rate. Managing this leaf economy is crucial, as overspending can leave players vulnerable to enemy onslaughts.
Once constructed, caterpillar units automatically move forward to engage the opposing forces. Timing the deployment of different unit types is key, as slower, heavily armored caterpillars can be overwhelmed by swarms of faster, cheaper units if not supported properly. Players cannot directly control the units, so anticipating enemy movements and countering them with the right combination of firepower is a core skill.
To aid their caterpillar armies, players can call upon special woodland allies at strategic moments. These include a Wizard Turtle that slows down foes, a Bird that carpet bombs the enemy, and a Squirrel that provides a temporary leaf generation boost. Deploying these abilities effectively can turn the tide of a close battle.
The game features over 50 unique campaign levels, each with their own layout and obstacles to overcome. Some levels may require specific unit compositions to defeat powerful boss enemies, while the endless mode presents an escalating series of enemy waves to test the player's ability to build a flexible, resilient force.
